To solve this problem, Newman wrote a theological masterpiece, the Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine (1845). In it he argued that Christianity, like all world-changing ideas or movements, needed time for its full understanding and perfection, and its unfolding was not merely the logical teasing out of the meaning of a complex statement, but an historical and social process involving human ingenuity and responsiveness to new situations.
